I watched my brother-in-law win a sailing race in the Poconos this summer. This is not unusual, as he is a very good sailor. What really hit me for the first time was how his performance was a valuable object lesson on life in general and leadership in particular. This inspired me to shoot the following video.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hey Chip!
I really enjoyed your story! It’s a great
reminder for us to get out there and learn
from the best, yet plot our own course for
our life… take risks, make mistakes, and
live life to the fullest!
Keep up the great work!

Kary – Thanks for the comment. It was one of those things that I had seen so often (the race). But I was reading Seth Godin’s Tribes at the time and the allegory hit me like a ton of bricks. Still, its hard to see the other side sometimes when you are living it in real time. That is the value of learning to step back.
Best to you!

I really enjoyed your story as well Chip. It is truly amazing how many people are a creature of habit when it comes to leading or following. It is scary to some to venture out and try to lead a group of people but when it is put into perspective as you have done, it will make people sit back and think about their own course of life.
Hope to see you in the store soon. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Susan! Glad you liked it. In the end, we create habits that define us. We are way too quick to build our own litter box. While we may be drawn to step outside the lines, we’ll quickly retreat unless we burn a bridge or build a wall on the way out. Sometimes its best if the only option is forward.
